History
The Bachelor’s (S1) program in Biomedical Engineering is housed within the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at Campus C of Universitas Airlangga. Initially, the program was known as “Biomedical Technology” (Teknobiomedik). The establishment of this program was one of the factors that led to the transformation of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) into the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)—a change formalized by the Rector of Universitas Airlangga’s Decree No. 3294/J03/OT/2008, dated April 10, 2008—alongside the introduction of other new study programs: Information Systems and Environmental Science and Technology. The Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program is situated under the Department of Physics, alongside the Physics undergraduate program and the Biomedical Engineering master’s (S2) program.
The first coordinator of the Bachelor’s (S1) Biomedical Engineering study program was Dr. Imam Sapuan, S.Si., M.Si., who served from 2008 to 2011. He was succeeded by Prof. Dr. Retna Apsari, S.Si., M.Si., who held the position until 2013. The leadership of the Biomedical Engineering program then passed to the late Prof. Dr. Moh. Yasin, who served from 2014 to 2015. In 2016, Dr. Khusnul Ain, S.T., M.Si., took over from the late Prof. Yasin as the coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering study program, serving until 2019. Since 2020, the Biomedical Engineering study program has been coordinated by Dr. Riries Rulaningtyas, S.T., M.T.
From its inception until 2021, the Bachelor’s program in Biomedical Engineering offered two areas of specialization: biomedical instrumentation and biomaterials. In 2021, coinciding with a redesign of the curriculum, these were expanded into three areas of specialization: medical instrumentation and biomechanical engineering; biomedical informatics; and tissue engineering and artificial organs.
