Capable of providing engineering solutions for the healthcare industry in the areas of Biomedical Instrumentation Systems and Biomechanical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, as well as Tissue Engineering and Artificial Organs.

Dr. Riries Rulaningtyas, S.T., M.T.

Head of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering

The Bachelor’s (S1) program in Biomedical Engineering is housed within the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at Campus C of Universitas Airlangga. Initially, the program was known as “Biomedical Technology” (Teknobiomedik). The establishment of this program was one of the factors that led to the transformation of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) into the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)—a change formalized by the Rector of Universitas Airlangga’s Decree No. 3294/J03/OT/2008, dated April 10, 2008—alongside the introduction of other new study programs: Information Systems and Environmental Science and Technology. The Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program is situated under the Department of Physics, alongside the Physics undergraduate program and the Biomedical Engineering master’s (S2) program.

Graduate Profile

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering are equipped to serve as practitioners who develop healthcare technologies, research assistants, postgraduate students, entrepreneurs who launch start-ups, bureaucrats within the healthcare sector, or managers who oversee resources—all while possessing strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.

MBKM: Freedom to Learn, Independent Campus

The “Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka” (Freedom to Learn – Independent Campus) policy, launched by the Minister of Education and Culture, serves as a framework to prepare university students to become resilient graduates—individuals who are relevant to the demands of the times and ready to emerge as leaders with a strong sense of national spirit. The foundation for the implementation of this policy is outlined in the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation (Permendikbud) Number 3 of 2020, which establishes National Standards for Higher Education. These standards grant students the right to pursue coursework outside their home institution for up to two semesters (equivalent to 40 credits) and to take courses in a different study program within the same institution for one semester (equivalent to 20 credits).
